TRIP OVERVIEW. PART I
CHINA β†’ TIBET | MAY 30 - JUNE 3
Part of the main Nomad Train journey in China, optional*

We board the world’s highest railway and travel across vast landscapes as the train climbs into the high mountains of Tibet, gradually ascending above 5,000 meters. The journey ends in Lhasa, the spiritual heart of Tibet, where we explore the Potala Palace and the ancient streets of the old city while adjusting to life on the plateau. This is the beginning of the expedition β€” a transition from China into the high Himalayan world.

If you want - you can join the group in Lhasa for the second part of the trip.

  • May 30. Evening train from Xining to Lhasa
Highlight of the journey and gateway to the Tibetan Plateau β€” the world’s highest railway, ascending above 5,000 meters.
As the train climbs onto the plateau, landscapes shift from green valleys to vast high-altitude deserts and snow peaks.

This railway is an engineering wonder: pressurized cabins and oxygen supply allow travelers to cross one of the highest inhabited regions on Earth. The train becomes a threshold between regions, climates and cultures β€” the moment when China slowly turns into Tibet.
  • May 31 - June 3. Lhasa
Arrival on the Tibetan Plateau. Time slows. Air thins.
We explore Lhasa, the spiritual heart of Tibet, visiting the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and the old Barkhor streets where pilgrims circle the sacred center of the city.

These days are intentionally slower β€” allowing the body to acclimatize to altitude and the mind to settle into the rhythm of the plateau. This is less about checking landmarks and more about absorbing scale, altitude and atmosphere.

June 2 is dedicated to preparing for the Kailash expedition.

Mt Kailash

The Kora is the traditional pilgrimage route around Mount Kailash. For centuries pilgrims from Tibet, India and Nepal have walked this path as a spiritual practice. The full circuit is about 52 kilometers and usually takes three days to complete and the highest point is Dolma La Pass (5630 m).

In Tibetan tradition it is said that:

KAILASH
EVEREST BASE CAMP β€” NORTHERN SIDE
Mt Everest from the Tibet side
Most travelers see Everest from Nepal.
This route approaches the mountain from the Tibetan side, one of the most dramatic viewpoints in the Himalayas.
From Rongbuk Monastery we see Everest rising directly above the plateau.

Few journeys combine Everest Base Camp and Mount Kailash in one expedition.

The original route to Everest.

Historically, the northern approach was the first route explored by Western expeditions. In the 1920s British climbers attempted to reach the summit of Everest from Tibet, decades before the first successful ascent in 1953. Today climbers still use the North Ridge route, though most expeditions (80-90%) now prefer the southern side in Nepal.
